Dental Implants

Dental implants are revolutionizing tooth replacement therapy. In many cases where dentures were the only treatment option, we can now offer replacement that look and function like natural teeth. Implants can restore ones ability to eat virtually any thing you choose as well as smile with confidence. Dental implants have now become the treatment of choice in many restorative situations.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are placed into the upper or lower jaw bone. The implants are surgically placed and most of the time are covered by gum tissue at the end of the procedure. The bone will then physically attach to the implant. This process is called osseointregration. Once this process is completed the implants will provide a strong foundation for several tooth replacement options. Small posts called abutments will then be secured to the top of the implants to provide an attachment through the gums to the new teeth. The dental implants can be used to secure a denture to replacing a single tooth.

The Surgical Procedure

In most cases, the placement of dental implants is a two step surgical process. In the first surgery the dental implants are placed into the bone and covered by gum tissue.

The second phase involves making small incisions to attach an abutment onto the implant to allow the restorative implant dentist to place the new teeth. Contrary to what you might think, most patients experience very little pain with either procedure.

While the implants are healing you should be able to wear a temporary denture and eat a soft diet. Usually within a few weeks after the second surgery your restorative dentist can begin to make your final teeth.

In some cases, depending on how long the teeth have been missing bone grafting may be necessary to for the implants to be successful.
